27th November 2017 : Rainy season brings with it and sometime a lot of trouble. Too much of rain and flooding is common, we have seen and heard this past few months in many areas around the world. Rain and tar roads have a strange chemistry, pot holes on our roads are common during rainy season!
One way to solve this issue isto have concrete roads, though an expensive option but provides a better solution in the long run. As cities and towns expand and grow, one thing we end up doing is use up all the space for buildings and road construction. This closes the open spaces and rain water flows into drains in a torrent. This also restricts the rain water from seeping back to the ground and recharge the ground water. This is one of the major negative side effect of growing and expanding cities.
Recently, there was a video that showed a type of newly invented concrete that absorbs gallons of water in minutes. The concrete has a property where good amount of water can seep in and then this can drained in an orderly way. This may be one more option to divert the water …
14th November 2017; If you have been reading the new lately, the headline says “India blah blah blah with eye on China”. It might look a little odd because very time India fortifies its defense and commercial ties, we see the headline. Well, this piece is not on China! One thing the strikes in this context is that not lose sight of our goals while you pursue you day to day activities, How many time have you had you eye on your career? Do you look at it every time you re getting into new project or getting out of a project? Do you keep an eye on your skill and how you can add keep increasing thee value.
Keeping an eye and creating actions that can directly or indirectly enhance your overall skill is a very important activity. Being conscious of what we want and how we can get there are critical to achieve career goals, both from a salary point of view as well as from the role point of view.
Many of us lose sight of the long term career objective and tend to go with the flow. There is nothing wrong with going with the flow. …
11th October 2017 : Last few days, flying cars made a lot of news, multiple companies have been working in building flying cars. So far this has been a sci-fi kind of reality and not practical. However, with the recent advances and money being poured into research, companies are making significant progress and experts say that sooner or later, this will be a reality. The one big question will be safety and then how can it be rolled for mass market.
But why are we discussing flying cars, was this site not for Python training, Python Automation and more. Well the connect is simple, as we see around us, in every conceivable domain, one constant factor is change and the change is technical innovation and change to make things better. All of the research and development is driving changes in the adoption of technology and the way it’s implemented. When all of these areas are seeing such huge technical shift, are you as a technical professional geared to face these challenges head on. Have you been innovative enough to identify the key skills needed from you job point of view. Have you lately looked at your career and see what …
Python and India Rail – what !
Yes, if you happened to read the newspaper today, Indian rail now has a long train that they call Python, yes Python. The length of the train is 118 carriages and is about 1.4kms long!! They have another train called Anaconda, which is also a lengthy freight train.
Well, how is rail and python connected, not really they do not have nothing in common. Its just that India Railways has been innovating on the same old infrastructure, adding more carriages, more freight and long trains. Just one way to keep up with the changing times and demands.
Well, that brings us to the question, are you keeping with the changing times in IT? Don’t be surprised if you are thinking, oh I never yet given a thought. There are many many who are still running their career on rickety old skills. Are yet to think of giving it a upgrade!
If you feel that you have not added any new skill in recent times, then you should be hearing the big been alarm ringing aloud and clear ! The writing has been on the wall for a long time now. Most of the …
7th Sept 2017 : The news about Automation and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) continues to pour in and its all not so good news for jobs. These process will eventually reduce the workforce as automation will do most of the Routine work.
The advancement of automation will impact at two levels of job seekers, one is the current set of professionals in BPO, IT where the manual jobs will get automated and hence they are forced to look for new jobs. The second set is for the new comers or fresh graduates who are coming out of colleges. They will have to graduate with better skills for the new jobs.
While one side of the story is the job loss, the second part of the story is job creation. Automation will not happen by itself and can not sustain by itself. Artificial intelligence may play some role, but that is still a very far distance away. That means, there will be many more new jobs created to design, build and maintain the automation elements and this will continue to grow as automation makes more inroads. The second side of the jobs growth is that in IT industry, change is a …Read More
2nd Sept 2017 :The recent news item from Times of India says “All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) says that wants to close down about 800 engineering colleges across India as there are no takers for their seats, and admissions are plunging in these institutions every year”.
The news clips goes on to say that every year 150 engineering colleges are closed down voluntarily as they do not meet the AICTE rules. The report quotes the AICTE web site “According to its website, AICTE has approved the progressive closure of more than 410 colleges across India, from 2014-15 to 2017-18. Twenty of these institutions are in Karnataka. A maximum number of institutions was approved for closure in 2016-17. Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have the maximum number of colleges which have sought progressive closure. Failing to survive, private engineering colleges either seek progressive closure and ultimately shut down or turn into polytechnics or science and arts colleges. “
This is a sad commentary on the abilities of colleges to move up the value chain in terms of making their students employment ready. One of the issues with some of these …Read More
24th August 2017: When two of the behemoths come together, it normally makes a lot of noise and generates a lot of fear in competition. Walmart is a retail giant and Google is an Internet giant. They have recently announced that google will sell Walmart products on Google’s express, its online shopping mall. If you were wondering when was Google into online shopping, well, its no surprise, they have been also ran in the online shopping business from 2013.
Amazon has been eating away the lunch of its competitors for years now and now has reached a point where, its becoming the default e commerce portal in the US. The efficiency with which is can generate sales and deliver them with auto precision has made life of traditional retailers very difficult.
The deal with Walmart and Google seems to be two fold, one Google will understand customer behavior and buying habits and second to use its digital voice assistant Google Home a voice activated buying / re-ordering. Walmart plans to leverage Google to reach out to online shoppers as one more avenue to checkmate Amazon.
The traditional brick and mortar retailers have seen sales decreasing year on year and have …Read More
11th August 2017 : Docker is the business software company that pioneered the concept of containers is raising USD 75 Million dollars, valuing the company at USD 1.3 Billion dollars.
Docker is wildly popular open source software that can package codes / software that can be moved from one server to the other easily, its light weight alternative to virtual machines and software developers can more efficiently build, distribute and run software programs on diverse systems as independent pieces.
Wiki describes it as “Docker provides an additional layer of abstraction and automation of operating-system-level virtualization on Windows and Linux. Docker uses the resource isolation features of the Linux kernel such as cgroups and kernel namespaces, and a union-capable file system such as Overlay FS and others to allow independent “containers” to run within a single Linux instance, avoiding the overhead of starting and maintaining virtual machines.”
Docker is a useful tool tool that can package an application and its dependencies in a virtual container that is highly portable. This will provide the flexibility and portability to run the packaged application on premises, public cloud, private cloud, bare metal, etc.

CTSH had internally offered voluntary separation package (VSP) a couple of months back and the news is that 400 of its executives have accepted it. The company claims, it will save is USD 60 million annually dur to this move.
The good news is that some of these companies are also pointing where the technical winds are blowing. The tData Science and Automation. Each of these domains are changing the way companies are hiring and out sourcing work to third party IT services company.
As the technical landscape continuously changes, its imperative that all the passengers in the IT ship re-orient and align their technical skills accordingly. 5th August 2017 : Recently, Bask Iyer, CIO and Executive Vice-President of Dell and VMware, has said in an interview with Business line that no organisation can re-skill the resources. “I am making sure that all my IT folks are best equipped to generate revenues rather than lay them off. People without the skill-sets to go ahead to the next level in a company will go anyway, that’s just the way it is,” Iyer said in an interview to The Hindu Business Line.
He went on to say that “As for reskilling, no organisation provides for that because even they don’t know what to train employees on”. In a way, he is stating a know fact, reskilling tens of thousands of employees is not practical and very expensive for companies. While many companies try to reskill, one of the issues with IT services industry is that the over all number of employees are very large. The second issue he mentions is that even companies may not know what to train them on.
The reality is also that people who do not acquire the right skill will be the ones left out and that is one of the reasons we hear …Read More
30th May 2017 ; Cisco announced its 3rd Quarter result recently and showed a decline of revenues by 1%.year over year at US $11.9 Billion. Cisco has also announced cutting down of 1100 jobs. This is in additional to the 5000 plus jobs cut that was announced last August.
There has been a constant pressure on traditional network equipment manufacturers like Cisco as the market continues to move more and more towards virtualization and subscription based models. There has also been a slowdown in some of the markets for Cisco, all of which has slowed down the revenues. Cisco said it expects revenues to fall 4 percent to 6 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter.
Cisco continues to be the biggest of players and has been acquiring companies to add to its portfolio.

The headline news from the big IT companies continues to be depressing, more layoffs and more cost cutting. Cost cutting has been an on-going exercise over the last 8 – 9 years after the 2008 financial meltdown. Even small amount of trimming the bottom 1 – 2 % has been a regular exercise. However, what is different this time is the layoff s and letting go is being targeted at the mid-level executives of 10 – 20 years’ experience. We have not seen this kind of a initiative on this scale in the recent memory.
Many of the experts say that this mid-level forced attrition will not be a one off event, this will continue to gain momentum as the market moves away from the old model of out sourcing.
The IT big ticket contracts are getting increasingly competitive and the customers are expecting and getting companies to lower their prices significantly for large contracts. The price pressure is making companies look at alternative ways of reducing the overall delivery cost. That means each and every resource on the project has to be an individual contributor part from any other responsibility More over many …

5th May 2017 : The recent head line news have all been not encouraging in the Indian IT industry. There more and more cost cutting and belt tightening happening and in the process, companies are letting go of resources that they consider as not having the skills for the digital economy.
The latest news reports about Cognizant Technology solutions (CTS) mentions that the mid and senior level employees are the ones that are being offered a severance package from six to nine months of salary. The news reports suggest that the identified employees have been offered this package and they have to decide.
All of these downsizing especially at the mid and senior level points clearly to the fact that these mid-level executives perhaps are out of sync In terms of skills with the current technology trends. They may have slept on the wheel while the technical landscape continued to move away from their past skills.
There cannot be more emphasis on the fact that in today’s IT world, it’s absolutely mandatory to have technical skills that are current and this applies more so to the experienced mid-level professionals as they are the most vulnerable when it comes to downsizing …Read More

2nd May 2017; The Trump effect is beginning to show, with the heat turned on H1 Visas, Indian companies have been looking at alternative options to secure the large US market. The announcements from Infosys and some of the other big Indian companies seem to suggest that they will now expand more development centers in the US and hire locally. The announcement from Infy says that they may create 10,000 jobs in the US and hire them locally.
Given the current environment, this looks like a good business move as they not only want to protect their current market share but also mitigate Trump administrations strong arm push to tighten H1 Visas. Also from a business point of view, this may work well as billing rates can improve and there can be more cross pollination of ideas and new delivery models. Such large investments in building local delivery capabilities will also improve their ability to adopt cutting edge technologies quickly and pivot to technical leadership position early.
This is likely to impact the hiring patterns in India somewhat negatively in the near future. Every …Read More
Lowe Power Wide Area Newtorwk (LPWAN) is a key element in rolling out an industrial IoT solution. The current LPWAN technologies support connectivity range for a few kilometers (in urban environments) to 30 kilometers in rural settings. The devices that will use this kind of connectivity will send a few light weight messages in an hour and hence will consume low power. This will facilitate for better battery life, which could last several years before requiring replacement.
An effective industrial IoT (Internet of Things) solution will have the need to connect geographically remote locations from where the data needs to be gathered. This will mean that the geographical locations and equipments that need the IoT sensor will have to work using extremely low power and work for years without a battery replacement.
There are a number of different standards that have emerged for LPWAN solution. 3GPP has specified three LPWA technologies: EC-GSM-IoT, LTE MTC Cat M1 and NB-IoT. A large group of companies have come together as the LoRa Alliance to promote the benefits of LoRaWAN. The LoRaWAN alliance consists some of the leading industry heavy weights

Extreme Networks has been acquiring big ticket assets in the last 2 months. It acquired Brocade’s Data center line of products and it also acquired Avaya’s networking technology for a US $ 100 million. Extreme Networks competes with Juniper, Cisco and many others in many of the product categories, some of which are fairly significant in terms of revenues.
It not uncommon for companies to compete and take a jibe at each other in their product messaging and advertising. The markets are highly competitive and messaging plays an important role in building the positive perception and hence better customer resonance.
Brocade went through a tough few months when it was acquired by Broadcom and Broadcom then decided to sell off the Ruckus wireless and the Data center business. The Brocade’s data center business has been doing well and Broadcom did not see much of a synergy. The announcement created a little bit of uncertainty for Brocade’s clients as Broadcom did not have buyer at that stage even though they announced their intent to sell.

There has been a lot of noise about the changing of rules for H1 visa and how it will be issued. The recent executive order from President Trump highlights that the highest skills and highest salary will get preference for H1 visas. In a way, it’s become more meritocratic in the sense, resources with skills are that in demand and hard to find are the ones likely to get through this complex system.
The bottom line is that in the IT world, skill and knowledge are becoming increasing one of the key strengths for an individual to move up in the employment ladder. Staying current and upskilling to keep up with the technology demands is a key facet of life that simply cannot be ignored.
Unlike earlier decade where experience counted more than skills, today, experience can go against an individual for many of the high paying jobs. One often hears stories of professionals are finding it harder to change jobs as the interviews screening and fine comb filtering of key skills makes many of them unemployable for many key technical positions.
The current demand in the industry is a combination of domain expertise and hands on skills. The more …
One of the leading newspaper has a news article quoting a survey that highlights that 95% of the fresh engineering graduates are not coders. The news article goes on to state that the engineering graduates cannot write a compilable code.
It may be debatable if the number of graduates who cannot code is 95% or something lower. However, one fact that perhaps is closer to truth is that our University curriculum does not focus on building technical skills. One of the key skill is to code and somehow, this is not given the importance that they potentially can.
The companies that recruit these freshers from campuses have found an expensive and not so efficient way of putting them through an in-house program that runs for months. Companies hope that with that extended and costly training, these resources can be made employable and more importantly, deployable on projects.
Often such trained resources are still raw and need hand holding for a further period of time. Long story short, the bottom line is that acquiring a good coding skill is of paramount importance to anybody who wants to build a career and its equally applies to the people who are already working …Read More

A recent report in Economic Times says 60% of fresher engineering graduates have not found employment. That’s an alarming number and not sure how accurate that data is. It’s a fact that the large scale hiring of freshers that was on until a few years back has been scaled back by many companies. The reasons could be several that includes growth slow down, increasing their bench utilization, re-skilling, pressure on margins etc.
In earlier times, companies were hiring freshers from campus all over the country and putting then through in-house skill based training for months. This model worked successfully for many companies over the last decade or more. The companies were happy as their growth justified such investments and the delivery models of having good number freshers in projects was acceptable.
If you are a fresher and hunting for a job, the most important thing that should be doing is “skill searching”! What is the skill that will make me you employable?
However, in the last few years, the growth rate for IT companies has slowed down and some companies are struggling to get back their growth momentum. The other change of business dynamics is due to …

If you have been following today’s news, most newspapers are screaming layoffs at Cognizant Technologies (CTS) with estimates ranging from 6,000 to 15,000. Given the size of CTS, these are in lower single digit percent but still a significant number. One reason could be the bottom 3% are being let go based on the performance appraisal. Some say, this has been happening in other companies and as well and this not something new.
Whatever be the truth, IT jobs and employment landscape is changing faster than ever. What this means is that staying employable and staying “current” with the right skills is not only essential, it’s also need of the hour for survival.
One of my old time colleague would often quote that his earlier boss had once told him that one should have an offer letter (a new job offer offer letter) in his right draw at any given time! That’s one extreme way to keep checking your employability and market worth!!
One way to stay in the race and be ahead would be have a discipline to keep self-assessment as a regular process. Identify the key skills and gaps and bench mark yourself from a …

Now that the dust of Amazon’s S3 blunder is settling down, one question that will come to haunt is how this did happen in spite of an established playbook with a company like Amazon. As per Amazon, instead a few servers that were supposed to be removed, hundreds were knocked out all with one wrong command. That sounds pretty scary that such an error happened in a highly reliable S3 service.
The moral of the story is that no matter how big or how experienced a company may be, there will always be gaps as long as human element is involved. The playbooks only cover what should happen and how it should happen. The rules of the pay book apply correctly almost always. The problem corps up when using the same play book, a human error occurs. The mitigation for such an eventuality is to have a checks that will flag such errors immediately and a well thought out fall back plan that not minimizes the fall out quickly. The best case scenario is to proactively mitigate it completely.
Amazon may have already further reinforced in their playbook with adequate checks and balances and …Read More
Python for Protocol Testing and Automation
Protocol Testing is a very important piece of engineering activity that most companies take seriously. It’s a make or break activity as far their product line is concerned and hence most companies look at these positions as very critical. Protocol testing and Automation is a very important skill that any manual tester should acquire if they are manual testers.
If one looks back historically, most of the companies adopted Tcl/Tk as the scripting language to build protocol testing automation.
Later on, some of the companies adopted Perl to accomplish the protocol testing automation. But now in the last few years, many of the companies are migrating to Python as the scripting language of choice.
Some of the companies are migrating their older scripts to python on a need basis and all of the new initiatives are now being under taken with Python.
Python automation is fast gaining ground and more and more companies are adopting and when they hire resources, one of the mandatory skills that they look for is automation and Python is one of the preferred skill.
What this means is two things, one Python has gained prominence in protocol testing and …Read More

These trends are accelerating and will change the IT employment landscape more disruptively. The impact of these will be more evident in the IT services industry as the number of people employed are massive in numbers.
Under these circumstances, the job security and the employability criterion are fast changing and more so the services driven IT industry. Career growth also can get impacted as companies will adopt a different set of metrics to evaluate how key a resource is rewarded and let go of resources who may not fit into the new scheme of things.

If you have been following the recent news Amazon had some glitches with its servers due to human error. Amazon said in a blog post that “An incorrect command led to the removal of a larger set of servers than intended”. The slowdown was in the Simple Storage Service, or Amazon S3 service. It took them nearly 4 hours restore normalcy. In today’s high paced world, that is a lot of time and many sites suffered including Retailers.
We see this happen so many times that human error can cause unintended consequences and most of which result in monetary loss and customer good will a well.
Could this error have been avoided? In hind sight may be yes but in reality errors can occur anytime manual interventions are involved. After all we are humans and never perfect, so there is always a chance that some error could happen somewhere, though unintended.
Could Amazon have automated some of these tasks and help avoid the error. Not sure if automation or lack of had a play in this. Amazon is a leader and they may have enough and more ways they would have already automated …Read More
